NAPLES, Fla. - Notes from the general managers’ meetings:

# Judging from their aggressiveness in trade talks, the Devil Rays appear increasingly willing to trade one of their young outfielders most likely Rocco Baldelli for premium young pitching.

The Rays floated the idea of trading Baldelli to the Phillies for left-hander Cole Hamels at these meetings, but the Phillies wanted no part of such a deal.

Other possible targets for the Rays if they move Baldelli or left fielder Carl Crawford: Angels right-hander Ervin Santana, Dodgers right-hander Chad Billingsley or one of the Marlins’ young starters.

# While the Angels, Cubs, Phillies and Dodgers remain the leading contenders for Alfonso Soriano, none of those teams appear to be in contention for the other top free-agent hitter, Carlos Lee.

The Giants, Orioles, Astros and Rangers are showing the strongest interest in Lee, according to major-league sources; Lee would represent a fallback position for the Giants if they lost free-agent left fielder Barry Bonds.

Several executives consider Lee a better pure hitter than Soriano, but the Dodgers are among the clubs that view Lee as more of an American League player due to his large frame and questionable defensive ability.

Soriano, 30, had a slightly higher on-base/slugging percentage than Lee last season, but struck out 160 times in 728 plate appearances. Lee, who is about six months younger than Soriano, struck out only 65 times in 695 plate appearances.
