Through a club press release, the Detroit Tigers have officially re-signed free agent Kenny Rogers to a one-year pact.
“We are pleased to have Kenny back in a Tigers uniform for the 2008 season,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “Kenny is a veteran presence that stabilizes our starting rotation.”
Rogers recently fired über agent Scott Boras after a disagreement on how he was being handled.
The Tigers also announced the signing of free agent pitcher Francisco Cruceta, formerly of the Texas Rangers, and designated Chris Shelton and Timo Perex for assignment.
Quanis Phillips of Atlanta and Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach, the two co-defendants in the Michael Vick federal dogfighting conspiracy investigation, were sentenced to 18 months and 21 months in person, respectively.
The pair could’ve received five years in the pokey for their roles.
Sentencing parameters called for punishments of 12 to 18 months for Peace and 18 to 24 months for Phillips, who has a more extensive criminal record. Both men also were levied fines of $250 and will be placed on three years’ probation after their release.

After years of delay, it’s finally known how much legendary coach Joe Paterno makes piloting the Nittany Lions: roughly $500,000.
The State Employees’ Retirement System released Paterno’s salary more than a week after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the salaries of Paterno and other top Penn State officials are public information.
Paterno, 80, was paid $427,220 in the first 10 months of 2007_ putting his year-end salary on track to exceed $500,000. He was paid $490,638 last year, according to the retirement system.
To put things in perspective: Nick Saban, who was hired by Alabama late last year, earns a cool $4 million per annum.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Phil Jackson have reportedly reached an agreement to extend the 62-year old’s contract another two years for about $24 million.
Jackson’s decision to return was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on its Web site.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Tampa Bay Rays and free-agent reliever Troy Percival are closing in on an agreement that will pay the former all-star $8 million over two years.
