Stark: O’s owner has yet to greenlight Bedard deal

28 01 2008

Source: Angelos yet greenlight proposed Bedard deal (ESPN.com)

ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports that the proposed deal that would send lefty Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners has not yet been approved by Baltimore owner Peter Angelos.

Stark also writes that the same source also indicated that Angelos wasn’t informed of the particulars of this latest proposal until late Sunday and that he won’t be available Monday to confer with the Orioles’ baseball officials because of a personal matter.

Stark also points out that the longer this situation drags out, the likelihood of a deal being consummated dwindles.

Clemens’ agent releases statistical manifesto

28 01 2008

Clemens’ agent contests notion that drugs boosted career (AP/USATODAY.com)

The agent for Roger Clemens issued an 18,000-word statistical manifesto report that disputes popular opinion that “The Rocket’s” career took off during the time he allegedly took PEDs in the late 1990s-early 2000s.

“Of the six years that feature Clemens’ best ERA margins, two occurred in Boston, after he had been in the major leagues for several years; two occurred in his two years in Toronto; and two occurred after he switched leagues and pitched for the Houston Astros,” the report said.

“During the 1996 season Clemens ranked first in strikeouts in the American League and tied his own record by striking out 20 batters in Detroit on Sept. 18, 1996. In addition, he ranked sixth in the American League in ERA, second in the American League in hits per nine innings, and fifth in innings pitched. This performance cannot be reasonably categorized as a ‘twilight.’ “

We suppose we’ll get more answers to the many questions we have regarding his performance towards the end of his career with his testimony before the House subcommittee on Feb. 13.

In the meantime, we won’t be holding our collective breath.

Is Bedard deal close with Seattle?

27 01 2008

M’s call Jones home, deal for Bedard may be close (Seattle Times)

According to published reports in The Seattle Times and verified by FOXSports.com’s national baseball writer Ken Rosenthal, the Seattle Mariners may be on the cusp of acquiring lefty Erik Bedard from the Baltimore Orioles.

Geoff Baker wrote that the Mariners have recalled prized prospect Adam Jones from the Venezuelan Winter League playoffs and he will fly to Baltimore for a physical on Monday.

Jones virtually confirmed the deal.

“(Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news,” Jones said. “I’ve got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I’m the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners’ side. It’s an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is.”

[…]

“It’s going to be weird being in a whole new organization,” he said. “I’ve got to go to Florida for spring training, but I just have to go over there, just meet all the guys, get in with them good and play baseball the way I know I play.”

There isn’t work on who will be tagging along with Jones to Baltimore, but it was rumored that the O’s had interest in reliever George Sherrill, Brandon Morrow, and minor-leaguers Jeff Clement, Carlos Triunfel and Chris Tillman.

It’s been awhile: Mets take lead in Santana derby

23 01 2008

Heyman: Mets take lead in Santana derby (SI.com)

Major League Baseball’s very own “Never Ending Story” continues to roll on as Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that the New York Mets have taken the lead in the Johan Santana sweepstakes.

Heyman writes:

But for the Mets to actually land Santana it will take at least two significant hurdles being cleared, and that doesn’t include having to negotiate a long-term contract with him. First, the Mets have to agree to send over a package of many real prospects, probably five or more, which would considerably deplete their minor-league resources. Second, the Red Sox and Yankees, who are both better stocked at the upper reaches of the minors, have to continue to take a less then enthusiastic approach in the competition to add one of the game’s top two pitchers.

In other words, this really isn’t an update.  It’s just something for us to post.
